Boulangerie

Music from the 20th century

“Boulangerie” is a programme that revolves around Nadia Boulanger. The 20th century French composer and teacher was a professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire. Her own house, called the “Boulangerie”, was also a meeting place for many composers of the time, whom she taught music theory, composition and music analysis.

Francaix, Barber, Glass and Piazzolla studied with Nadia Boulanger. She was also Fauré’s assistant and his successor as organist in the church La Madeleine de Paris.

The programme includes works by various students of Boulanger, stylistically distinguished by minimalist music by Philip Glass, dance forms by Jean Francaix, choral pieces by Samuel Barber and Latin American influences by Astor Piazzolla. Boulanger was strongly influenced by Fauré in her own compositions.
